Credit Card Confessions This week has given me that “back to school” feeling I always had in Septembers growing up.   After an awesome Labor Day weekend, summer is officially over (well, socially at least).   My online class is back in session, the weather is a bit cooler, I’ve started creating my fall work schedule and I’m starting to wonder where in the world my fall boots might be. Since this year is flying by, I took a minute to review my 2010 goals to make sure I’m on track for the home stretch of 2010.   The document which contains my 2010 goals also contains my 2008 and 2009 goals- all of which start with, “pay off credit card completely!”   And what is step one to paying off a credit card?   Stop using it. I stopped using a credit card in February of this year.   And then I relapsed in April.   And then again in July (This time it was because of my love affair with Filene’s Basement and TJ Maxx. Note to self: buying deeply discounted merchandise almost every day doesn’t count as a sale. And at some point, BOGO sales are no longer effective either). The funny part is that I could teach you the math behind how credit card companies make money.   I was trained on this at my 1st job after college.   Most credit card companies compound interest daily and before you know it, you are being charged interest upon interest at ridiculous rates.     If I know how credit card companies are charging me interest then why am I still relapsing when it comes to being “credit card free?” I’m very aware of my bad habit of emotional shopping.   Some of you eat when you are feeling stressed or sad.   Some of you run marathons or sleep a lot.   I shop.   One tiny sale item at a time.   I don’t buy Prada bags, fancy shoes or plane tickets.   Instead, I get caught up buying a lot of little things that are “on sale.” I’ve asked my boyfriend Thano to remove credit cards from my wallet and keep them until they are paid off.   This only leads me to ordering replacement cards. Which, naturally, leads to me yelling at Thano for doing his job.   Nice girlfriend I am, right?! Last week I cut up the last credit card I had in my possession and told Thano to cut up the one he had in his possession too.   I’m starting over again on my journey to credit card “sobriety.”   There are only 4 months left in 2010, and I want to live them without a credit card. In order to do this, I must consider a few things: It’s time to follow the HALT principal â€" Do not shop if you are hungry, angry, lonely or tired (this tip comes from a strategy that is said to be used in AA.)   In my case, I shop when I am bored and when I don’t have a project outside of work (time to get blogging!). Find out why I feel I “NEED” to go to Walgreens RIGHT NOW (there is one on every corner) and buy a new lip gloss, another lotion and a candle. Because I know I don’t need new lip gloss.   And why the urgency? Stay far, far away from Ann Taylor LOFT. Because it is across the street from my office. And because they are always having some kind of 40% or 50% off sale that lures me into buying several non-sale items.   I find myself justifying purchases by thinking something like, “well, it’s ok because these are work clothes. You have to look good at work.   This is part of your personal brand.” I need to get uncomfortable. “Get comfortable being uncomfortable” is my motto for 2010 yet I haven’t applied it to this little addiction. It’s time to allow myself be uncomfortable by saying NO.   You will not die because you didn’t buy new zebra print towels at TJ Maxx.   Yet, I don’t often let myself leave the store disappointed. I’m sharing these confessions with you because I know a majority of you has struggled with credit cards at some point in your life too.   As much as I joke, I’m very lucky that my spending isn’t as major as it could be.   My credit score is over 800 and at this pace I’m debt free within the next few months (if I stop swiping that is!). I know many others aren’t as lucky.   Most people struggle with spending because they aren’t willing to talk about their spending habits or debt.   Avoidance seems easier, right?   So they hide their ”addiction” and their problem becomes worse and worse. Here are six tips to avoid bad career advice. Consider the Source Not all career advice is created equal. When reading a book, article, or blog post, look at the author and the credibility of the outlet. Is it somewhere you have heard of and trust? Career advice from Forbes should be considered differently than a blog post on someone’s personal site, especially if there are typos and mistakes. The same principle applies to people giving you advice. A recommendation from your parents using outdated examples is different from up-to-date advice from a career counselor.  Consider whether the source knows your industry, has current information, and knows what it is like to build a career in 2017. If you’re pursuing a career in healthcare, for example, you’ll want to talk to someone who can give specific advice on things like medical transcription courses. Avoid Yes-men Everyone naturally wants to be surrounded by people who build them up and encourage them, but that shouldn’t always be the case when you’re trying to build a career. Someone who supports even your worst ideas and tells you they will be great for your career isn’t giving good advice. Look for sources that provide both support and fight your career plans, as sometimes tough love can lead to the best advice. It could be just the wake-up call you need. Make Sure Theyre Invested in you It’s easy for someone claiming to be a career expert to throw out generic advice, especially if it helps them and their bank account. The best advice comes from people and sources who are knowledgeable and also invested in your careerâ€"someone like a mentor who wants to see you succeed individually can give advice that is personalized for your situation and that does more than just help them feel good about helping someone else find the path. Too many people talk just to hear themselves talk, especially on the internet and social mediaâ€"make sure the advice comes from someone who cares about your career. Use Multiple Sources Even the best mentor can lead to bad career advice if that is the only source you use. You wouldn’t write a research paper with one source, just like you would likely go to a doctor for a second opinion on major medical issues. So, after hours of mindlessly scrolling Twitter, you’ve finally mustered the self-discipline to start writing your CV. But sitting there in front of a blank screen with that flashing cursor blinking tauntingly at you, your heart suddenly sinks. Your mind has gone as blank as the page before you and you’re wracking your brain trying to think of the last noteworthy thing you did. If you’re a student with very little or even no work experience, the prospect of writing a CV can make you want to bury your head in the sand. However, it’s important to remember that the skills you’ve gained in your academic career can be used to your advantage. All it takes is a little introspection and some well-considered wording to make your CV shine. So, where to begin? First cast your mind back over your time at university to specific experiences you’ve had, and then dissect that experience. What did you learn? Did you overcome any difficulties? How did you approach the experience? Once you’ve answered these questions you’ll find you’re easily able to express that experience as evidence of a skill that might be valuable to employer but I’ve given you a few examples below to get the ball rolling. Nowadays it often feels like you need experience to get experience, but remember everyone has to start somewhere! A year abroad   This is something   that most language students, and many students of other disciplines will have done, and it’s fantastic for showing off your skills. Moving to a different country with a different language and culture can be used as evidence of your adaptability to new situations a skill that’s vital for entering a fresh workplace. If you picked up the language while you were there then you have both a desirable language skill and evidence of your willingness to learn and persevere double whammy! Close reading/Analysis/Charts Graphs Whatever subject you do at university, you’re almost guaranteed to be faced with the task of taking information and breaking it down into constituent parts then representing it, or analysing it. Whether this is through close readings of a painting or poem, or putting data into a graph, being skilled at analysing information is a highly desirable skill across a variety of career sectors, from data journalism to finance. On your CV therefore, you can delve  into the kind of analytic work your degree demanded of you as evidence of your critical faculties. Dont get too technical though. Presentations   Possibly the most obvious of all these transferable skills, simply because many workplaces require employees to do presentations, whether at the interview stage or in the role itself. Having made presentations whilst at university sets you up wonderfully for this, and also demonstrates your confidence and organisational skills. If you’ve ever done group presentations even better, as you can cite that as an example of your ability to work well in a team. Go you!   All-nighters Ok, I’m slightly joking with this one. All nighters, if anything, are probably the worst way of trying to prove you’re a competent candidate for a job. But meeting deadlines is a good way. If there was any point in your academic career that you had several deadlines in quick succession and you met them all get it down! Almost all jobs will require you to meet targets or deadlines and employers need to know that you’re up to the task. Dissertations   It might have given you hell at the time, but a dissertation or long piece of academic writing can be of help to you on your CV. Key with any long piece of work is research, which can be used as a demonstration of your commitment and dedication to completion of a task. If you made any special trips to libraries or archives, or had to travel even further afield to do your research, make a note of it. Dissertations, or indeed any academic writing is also more obviously evidence of your writing ability, which is crucial to work across a number of sectors and roles. And once you’ve got it all down on paper, (and proof-read several times) sit back and wait for the offers to roll in. You got this!
